Learning Perseverance

Learning perseverance is an undertaking with remarkable benefits for the learner. You stand to benefit intellectually, in leisure pursuits, and at your occupation. This character trait also provides physical, psychological, social, and spiritual benefits. Some would say it gives you an indomitable spirit. Let's look at what you need to begin learning perseverance.

Learning perseverance requires the exercise of character. This is, itself, a character trait, but when learning perseverance, you will need to apply other character traits: commitment, decisiveness, determination, diligence, optimism, patience, persistence, purpose, resourcefulness, responsibility, self-control, and thoroughness.

You see, this is not an activity for the weak! So where do you begin? What must you do? What steps are involved in learning perseverance?

Learning Perseverance

Define the Character Trait

Define the character trait first. Use a clear definition such as this:

This character trait begins by understanding that there are likely to be obstacles to an undertaking I plan, but with keen desire for the goal, takes clear, continuing action to move forward, overcoming every difficulty, even at personal sacrifice, and keeping at it until the goal is reached.

List Benefits

Learning perseverance of that sort requires work, and the next step is to list the benefits you can expect. Motivate yourself by writing down the positive consequences of this character trait. Here are a few examples to get you started:

· Intellectual benefits. Students of every age realize increased academic achievement as a result of learning perseverance. Even those of us who have left formal education improve intellectually through dogged persistence. Write specific intellectual benefits you would like to realize. Maybe you want to wrap your brain around a course in statistics or business law. Write it on your list. Maybe your child needs to master phonics. Add that to your list of intellectual consequences.

· Leisure benefits. You will probably not have to think long to list the leisure benefits of learning perseverance. You can gain more leisure time by persevering in required activities, but there is more. You can learn new hobbies, sports, and other leisure activities. You can increase your ability in those you already enjoy. Add specific consequences to your list.

· Occupational benefits. Those who are employed outside the home can increase their value to an employer by learning perseverance - sticking to each task until it is done well. Those who work at home have their own positive consequences. List them. Children who are learning perseverance can list the benefits of completing chores, caring for pets, etc.

Goals

Once you have listed the positive consequences of learning perseverance, you are ready to set personal goals. Goals are desires with due dates. Think about what you desire to accomplish. What do you desire to undertake in which "stick-to-it-ness" will be required? You may want to start with a small desire when you are still learning perseverance. Later, you can stretch to a great desire such as lifelong marriage!

Exercise decisiveness, Write out your specific desire and attach a due date. By what day and year do you want to have realized that desire to master a course in statistics? Be specific. Be decisive.

Start Strong

Learning perseverance itself is an activity that calls for a strong start. This is where the character trait of commitment enters the picture. Make a firm commitment that you will master this important life quality. You will train yourself to be a person who is known for firm resolve.

Changes, Obstacles, and Setbacks

An inescapable part of learning perseverance is the task of dealing with changes, obstacles, and setbacks.

You will need to exercise determination when someone or some situation changes an aspect of your goal. For example, a boss may change the procedure for a project. A teacher may change an assignment deadline. Each change will test your commitment. Determine ahead of time that you will keep at it, even when changes occur.

Obstacles are not only possible - they are also probable. As Murphy's Law reminds us: anything that can go wrong will go wrong. You will have to exercise resourcefulness to find your way around roadblocks. You will need a strong dose of optimism to force yourself over the hurdles. Bumps in the road will try your patience. Just remember that it is all a part of learning perseverance. Exercise self-control and drive on toward the goal.

When you or your children are learning perseverance, you will sometimes think you are taking a step backward for every two steps forward. You know you are making progress, but setbacks keep stealing your momentum. Exercise persistence. Picture a bulldog with a big, juicy bone. You can grab the bone and pull, giving him a setback, but he will not let go of his bone, and neither should you.

Quitting Time

You have heard people say, "Winners never quit." Maybe you yourself have said it. The saying has become common, possibly because so few of us stick with things to their conclusion.

Quitting is not always a bad thing, however. When children are learning perseverance, they need to learn that. If you yourself are learning perseverance, remind yourself that there is such a thing as a proper quitting time.

You can recognize quitting time by asking yourself why you want to quit. If the answer is "too hard," "too long," or "impossible," you may be saying that you are lazy. It is time for diligence, not quitting.

Quitting is an activity, not a thought pattern.

If you find yourself drawn quickly and often to thoughts of quitting, you have not been learning perseverance. You have been training yourself in failure. You have programmed your mind to stop when you encounter obstacles instead of finding ways around them.

However, if you find yourself working through every obstacle, giving your all to a task or activity, you may reach a point where you realize that the cost is greater than the gain. You may learn that continuation will require a dishonest act or other moral sacrifice you had not foreseen. At that point, you may want to take the action of quitting.

An indomitable spirit can be good, but high moral values are more important than proving yourself unconquerable.

The Alchemist - A Book Review

I first heard about The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho while watching an interview of actor Will Smith. Mr. Smith named The Alchemist as his favorite book, which piqued my curiosity. The next day my husband, who had also seen the interview, came home with the book.

The novel tells the story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy, who has the courage to follow his dream. Santiago has a recurring dream about finding his treasure at the Pyramids of Egypt. As he travels from his homeland of Spain to the foreign land of Egypt, he meets a king, a gypsy, an Englishman, and an alchemist, all of whom point him in the direction of his true treasure. What starts out as a quest to obtain worldly goods becomes a discovery of the treasures found within.

The novel's message is that you should not avoid your destiny and that it's never too late to follow and realize your dream. The book points out that everyone is an "alchemist" and has the power to find their treasure and fulfill their Personal Legend. "It's what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their Personal Legend." The book encourages people to move past that belief, like the lady I recently read about who finally obtained her college degree at 100 years of age.

The Alchemist - A Book Review

The Alchemist is a short (163 pages) and simple fable, based on simple, yet profound, truths. It was originally published in 1988 in the author's native Portuguese. It has since been translated in nearly 70 languages and has become one of the best-selling books in history. It is a book that I plan to read again and again and I recommend it for anyone who needs some encouragement in pursuing their own Personal Legend.

Taking a Proactive Approach to Your Work

I can't think of any better advice to anyone wanting to get things done than to DO MORE NOW.

Yep, it's quite simple. Action has a way of getting results that the most proficient planner can never predict. Now I'm not saying that you shouldn't have a plan, and that you shouldn't do your groundwork before you take the first step. But there comes a time when you've just got to get out there and start work towards your goal.

No matter how much you need to get done, whatever your goal, or what you want to achieve you will simply never get there without taking the first step.

Taking a Proactive Approach to Your Work

You'll also get there faster if you start sooner! So take a look around, see what you've got already going for you, understand where you are and where you want to be and then go for it! You'll learn so fast that way.

I've often found that the things I though would be hard were not that hard, and the things I learned along the way helped me make up my mind about exactly what I wanted to do anyway. All those things I was unsure about while I was just "thinking about it" became unimportant and now the things that are important are more fun to tackle!

Proactive decision making and taking massive action towards your goal is a theme that will develop more and more power inside you too. As you can see yourself achieving your goals faster, and earlier than you will be drawn like a magnet towards doing more and more.

And the more you do, and the more you achieve the more you'll want to do more. It's inspirational!

So take the step today. Make a decision to do something towards what you want to achieve and you'll get there sooner. It's important.

How often do you hear people say, "Have a Blessed Day"? This, along with "God bless you" to name another rote statement, have become some of the many emotionless phrases we say out of habit that we really don't mean. Like saying, "How are you?" and not really caring enough to pay attention to the answer you receive.

Many times the person giving this wonderful greeting doesn't feel this good cheer for themselves either. They say things out of habit void of any real emotion and go right back to feeling negative, focusing on their own troubles and woes.

I got up early one morning and, like most of us, my mind began to search for troubled thoughts. It's like putting your radio on a control called "seek" and the radio automatically begins to find all the strong signals or stations available. Troubled thoughts can be louder and stronger than positive ones, if you let them. But here is where you can make the choice to find something you want to hear.

Have a Blessed Day!

So when my mind went on automatic and began to seek the negative thoughts, I took the controls and decided where I wanted my mind to stay. I chose to have a blessed day. I decided to look in the mirror and love the person I saw. I put on my clothes, combed my hair, put on a little makeup and gave myself my warmest smile, generally reserved for those I love.

I decided to feel blessed and focus on the wonderful things going on in my life. You see, whatever is not good in your life will still be there tomorrow. And tomorrow you can decide not to have a blessed day, if you like. You can tell yourself tomorrow that you are fat, that you are broke and that you are headed for destruction. You can decide tomorrow that you hate your job, hate your wife and your life.

But on this day, I decided that I was blessed and I was going to stay that way for the entire day. I can't tell you the happiness I felt. I can't tell you the joy in my heart. It brought tears to my eyes, just to be here. I set my mind solidly on this "station". I made a choice that I was going to have a blessed day. I made this statement out loud--"Whatever comes into my day today, whether it is wonderful and beautiful, or even if it is masquerading as trouble, I am setting my mind on having a blessed day."

So what happened?

It was truly a blessed day. Here are some highlights:

-My grandson gave me his best warm smile and said, "Bye Grandma!" with so much love as I saw him off to school.

-I walked into my backyard and saw two beautiful red mini roses peering out of a flowerpot that I thought was void of life a month ago.

-My husband told me how lucky he is to have me.

-My eldest son told me he put a note in his daughter's lunch just like I used to do for him.

I didn't think he even remembered that--heck, I hardly remembered that!

-A delivery that I really wanted came.

All through the day this is how it went. I really enjoyed myself. And it continued even into the second day all because I created this positive energy in making the decision to have a blessed day. How great is that?

So the next time you tell someone to have a blessed day make sure you mean it. Then go ahead and create one for yourself.

Young people learn how to build strong character in much the same way as we adults do. We begin by finding out what the benefits are. What's so great about it? What do children and teenagers have to gain? Or, as teens themselves might ask in current slang: "WIIFM? - what's in it for me?" They may text that to one another while you're talking!

"Learn how to build strong character as a teenager," you urge, "and you'll gain awesome advantages!" Some teens will smile at you, but others will glare with skepticism. They'll demand to know exactly what benefits they'll get from this apparently boring activity. Be prepared to make it exciting rather than boring, and then give clear, practical examples of perks such as the three below.

· Zit relief: Sure! Begin with something that bothers teenagers. Explain that learning how to build strong character traits such as self-control, determination, and persistence will help keep zits at bay. Even those who don't want to learn how to build strong character will get caught up in the fiction and, even inadvertently, come away with understanding.

Teenagers often plant their feet firmly against all attempts to pull them into morality. They don't want to hear what they should and should not do. They are wary of any attempt to teach them how to build strong character traits, even after you've shown them the benefits of such activity. Don't despair. Come in under their radar with teen novels that look like anything other than moral teaching - but subtly weave robust lessons into captivating plots. Some of these novels are actually best-sellers!

Young people will benefit somewhat simply by reading such books. If you're serious about training them in how to build strong character, however, you'll need to go back to Part One of this article and teach them to apply the same four steps you had to apply: understand, desire, set goals, and action.

Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist is a perfect example of the saying 'good things come in small packages'. The simple little tale conveys a very powerful and inspirational message. First published in Portuguese in 1988, it is considered a modern classic.

How long should your book be? How long a book should be depends on the genre and the intentions of the writer. If you want to self-publish, it doesn't matter how long your book is or isn't because you have total control. So why am I such a fan? I was fortunate enough to grow up in the neighboring province of Nova Scotia, and spent very many summers camping in Anne land. It's really as beautiful as the story describes and as the film depicts. Of course nowadays it is rather touristy with thousands of people from all over the world flocking to see exactly where this international celebrity was inspired. You can take a ride on Matthew Cuthbert's wagon ride around Green Gables, or roam through the haunted woods and imagine Anne and Diane's harrowing experience when Anne fell into the dark hole. Or you can merely sit on the red sand dunes, overlooking the ocean, and let yourself be inspired as both Lucy Maud Montgomery and her created character, Anne, were. One can be entertained by the play in Charlottetown, or visit the multitude of Anne shops -- from cookbooks, to dolls, to t-shirts.

Lucy Maud Montgomery stories are not only well-written but they're also heartwarming with positive messages interweaved in between the pages. It takes us back to a more innocent era where we find a delightful character that's full of hope and lives life to the fullest. Anne lives in the present moment, embracing nature and all those around her where she finds true joy in her relationships with both young and old. I miss this kind of writer -- one who inspires with a simple, clean story and who brings out an unconditional love for this feisty, loveable red-head. If you haven't had the opportunity to read these books, take the time. We need positive messages circulating in our world and hopeful feelings. When we are inspired by what we read, we can be motivated to serve as a source of inspiration to those around us.

Everywhere we look, we see the businesses such as restaurants, bars, resorts and casinos, that theme their uniform style to match their business' atmosphere. That's all well and good, but sometimes you might think that the uniform styles out there are a little homogenized. Of course, it's understandable that you want to keep to a professional image at all times. But you might also be feeling more creative, like you want to break out of the mold and re-invent the restaurant uniform concept.

Example: If you've seen the movie "Pulp Fiction", there's a restaurant that Vincent and Mia go to early in the film which looks like a fun place to go. It's modeled after the 1950's "rockabilly" era, and if you watch this scene carefully, you'll see some incredible uniform "casting" in this fictional restaurant. Gothic - Whether you like the style or not, the youth Goth movement is here to stay. It's actually a hand-me-down from the punk rock era, but in a style of Victorian era moodiness. Think lots of black, very edgy, and search the web to get an idea. The fact is, young people tend to go where they'll feel like they are understood and welcome. If that's the kind of target market you have in mind, dressing the staff a little Gothic themselves will help tie your brand identity to the culture which these people currently live in. Remember, they will be middle-aged grown-ups with a career and a house in the suburbs some day, and by then you'll have some serious customer loyalty!

Superheroes - OK, you cringed a little at first. But I'll bet a minute later, you saw what I'm getting at: now, what would you expect of a staff member who was a superhero? You'd expect excellent service, courteous behavior, perfect honor and trust... hey! We have such super employees, they're like superheroes already! This isn't as hard to do as you might think - take your standard uniform and add a short cape and a "utility belt" or a medallion or some other gimmick and you're there. Would work well for a family-themed place like a pizza parlor or someplace that catered especially to young kids.

Cosplays - "Cosplay" is a word which is a portmanteau (a word that combines two other words) of "costume" and "play". This is a Japanese subculture based on dressing up as characters from manga (Asian comics) and anime (Asian cartoons). Even less commonly, such subjects as Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, or Japanese pop music bands are also fair game.

The word has become popularly associated with dressing restaurant employees as French maids. This idea may sound goofy to you, but it's currently all the rage in China and Japan, as reported on culture-tracking sites like boingboing. Take a look in a search engine at some of the creative themes they've come up with to get some ideas. Oddly enough, these are not aimed at children but adults, in a culture where comics and cartoons are not seen as juvenile at all. This would be a big hit in a modern, up-to-the-minute environment such as a college town or a place with a lot of technology culture such as Silicon Valley, since its popularity is largely being spread by the Internet.

Science Fiction - If you've been to Las Vegas, one casino has a Star Trek theme ride and a restaurant attached to it called "Quark's Bar and Restaurant". Sure enough, the whole place makes you feel just like you're living in the Star Trek universe, right down to the staff uniforms! Gimmicky it may be, but a whole generation of Star Trek fans have grown up and even passed the culture on to their kids - this place makes a lot of money.

If you take a look at Star Trek uniforms, they are actually very serviceable. Now apply this idea to other fantasy and science fiction franchises with a huge following: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or anything with its own 'cult' following. Or just go with something futuristic, without nailing it down to any one particular work of fiction. This could work well in places like an espresso bar with Internet access, because computer buffs and science fiction fans tend to go well together.

Period Costumes - These are more in the range of "it's been done before". Pirates, cowboys, gypsies, ancient Egyptians, and so on. Surely you've stumbled upon a seafood restaurant with a pirate theme or a Western bar and grill in Texas with the staff dressed like they were living in the days of the wild frontier. Still, it's an idea to keep in mind - period costumes can add a fun theme to your atmosphere, but also be not too over-the-top so you can still keep a serious attitude.

There was a time when fiction was categorized in just a few main categories, the most popular being science fiction, horror, romance, and the western. Today's readers, however, have taken on more complex tastes, giving writers more freedom when writing their stories. Are you feeling sorry for yourself? What if your problems were reasons to rejoice? Can you imagine that a crisis might be an opportunity or even a gift in disguise? That's just one of the lessons Jason Stevens learns in The Ultimate Gift, an inspirational novel by Jim Stovall.

Wealthy patriarch Howard Red Stevens has died, but he still has one last trick up his sleeve. The decedent's estate plan provides a living for all his greedy relatives. But the benefactor reserves a special gift for his great-nephew Jason, "the last great vestige of hope" for his family. He loves Jason too much to make him an instant millionaire.

In his revised will, Stevens entrusts one final task to his longtime friend Theodore J. Hamilton. The attorney is charged with the oversight of Stevens' ultimate gift. Webster defines ultimate as final. It can also mean utmost, the best or fundamental. Stevens' gift to Jason meets all of these criteria.

Over the course of a year, Hamilton shows Jason a sequence of videotaped messages produced by his great-uncle prior to his death. These messages challenge the spoiled young man with a series of tests and launch him on a hero's mythic journey in quest of his treasure.

Our hero encounters obstacles along his path. He grows and matures as he learns the meaning of a well-lived life. For some readers, the videotaped directives may feel a bit contrived. Swept up in the saga, I journeyed along with Jason, attempting to guess the nature of the gifts. There are no big surprises nor anything esoteric in this tale. Simple truths are often the most profound and always worth remembering.

The Ultimate Gift will probably appeal to readers who enjoyed Tuesdays with Morrie or The Five People You Meet in Heaven. The book refers to a merciful God. It affirms that "life is a gift from The Good Lord." Yet it does not put forth any religious creed or dogma. Its message is universal. The core values and life lessons are applicable to people of any religious persuasion and to those with no religious affiliation. I imagined the character Red Stevens as a wise and kindly elder like Jim Rohn sharing his philosophy of life.

Crafted as a novel, The Ultimate Gift is a tender allegory. It would make an ideal graduation present. The gifts granted by Stevens resemble an ethical will, a meaningful way to pass on core values, beliefs and cherished memories. Legal and financial professionals may choose to share this resource with clients who want to bestow more than material wealth upon their progeny.

The quaint illustrations and sepia tones give this book an old-fashioned feel that connotes a treasure map. In this case, the treasure lies within. The short chapters allow readers to digest the message in small bites, reflect and apply the lessons in their own lives. This is the type of book that is passed along by word of mouth. The topics and format make it ideal for a family reading circle or a book club.

The imaginary character Red Stevens teaches his great-nephew, "In the end, a person is only known by the impact he or she has on others." Valley of the Fools: Turkey

The recent Turkish movie "Valley of the Wolves: Iraq" is, yet, another worthy picture in the collection of the Deranged Mind Gallery.

The Washington Time reports that, "Valley of the Wolves" is not the work of independents or amateurs. With a budget of million, it's the biggest-spending Turkish film in history. The international cast includes Hollywood actor Billy Zane of "Titanic."
Within three days of its release, the movie had been seen by 1.2 million people, a 40 percent increase on the previous viewing record. At a gala performance earlier this month, the actors rubbed shoulders with Turkey's elite.
"I feel so proud of them all," said Emine Erdogan, wife of the prime minister, comfortably ensconced in a seat next to the actor playing Alemdar."

Inspirational Fiction

The movie opens with a real-life incident: the arrest in July 2003 of Turkish special forces in Sulaymaniyah, northern Iraq. The soldiers were led out of their headquarters at gunpoint, with hoods over their heads. America later apologized, but it appears the offence ran deep. At the time Turkey took the incident as national humiliation. In this film the fictional hero sets out for revenge.

Valley of the Fools: Turkey

It depicts Americans as bloodthirsty villains who massacre civilians at the wedding (wasn't that Muslims in Jordan who did that?), kill innocent Iraqis for the sport of it and occasionally blow up a friendly neighborhood mosque during evening prayer. There are multiple summary executions. And for the first time, the real-life abuses by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison are played out on the big screen, (most likely, a product placement for ACLU.)
Then there is naturally a Jewish doctor, (you knew that was coming) who sells organs of killed Iraqis to clients in New York, Tel-Aviv and London (the Western axis of evil).

The movie is a box office success all over Europe, especially in Germany, which has a huge Turkish-immigrant population. The Muslims all over Europe are inspired by the message of the movie. Not "Wizard of Oz kind of" inspired but quote "If I see an American when I get out of here I feel like taking a hood and putting it over their head" inspired.
The outraged Turks and Muslims come out of the theatres with tears in their eyes looking for an American tourist to behead. This should be some movie, ha? It is really in touch with people's feelings and their everyday life. Certainly George Clooney can learn a lot from his Turkish colleagues.

At the end of the movie an outraged and righteous Turkish hero (note: righteous Turkish hero cannot be translated into Greek) eventually sticks a dagger into a heart of an American GI. As rightly calculated, in Berlin, this scene resonated with disenfranchised Turkish-immigrant audience, which at that moment cheerfully exploded in applauds while shouting, "Allah is Great!"(Or as the Greek say, "Give me a break".)

The Turkish producers are pushing this "new cinematic triumph" off to America to the theatre near you. So, if you tired of movies written by gay writers about gay cowboys getting into accidents with transsexual terrorists in Munich, there finally comes a breath of fresh air- a movie about how bad American GI's are and that Iraq is the new Vietnam.
I am sure everyone in America is eager to see this movie, except, perhaps, for Michael Moore and Oliver Stone. This piece of work is going to put them out of business. This is sad, indeed, because then the Jewish doctor must replace Michael Moore's shrinking stomach with an Iraqi one, and that, unfortunately, will require half-the city of Karbalah executed.

I should say though that this Turkish film should not be stopped, after all everyone is entitled to his or her mental syphilis. We here in America, especially, have no right to stop this film from destroying more Muslims minds. Remember, that it was our brave and outspoken American political filmmakers who inspired them to challenge the authority. The Turks simply followed. They are challenging the authority...the American authority (not their own of course.)

Even in its agony, Hollywood continues to inspire half intellectual filmmakers all over the world. It sets the tone. It is the endless America-bashing and vilification that creates these ugly film entities in other parts of the world. These weapons, which are used against us, are animated in the labs of Hollywood drawn with pencils of hate on boards of lies. The Turkish franchise is simply a secure investment in the devaluating market of confused images, a market that used to be a beautiful temple.

My fellow Americans, citizens of the most guilty country in the world, we should be ashamed for the examples we are setting for countries like Turkey which massacred one million and a half Armenians within two weeks in 1915.
By trying to protect ourselves from people who beat up a flag with a stick over a cartoon, we make the Turks angry, and we should not, because the last time they got angry they systematically wiped off their entire non-Muslim population. (If there are no Armenians around, ask a Christian Greek for facts, he's got a lot, keep your children's ears closed, though.)

After a screening of the movie in Germany, an inspired 18-year-old Turk told a reporter that,
"America is evil (the Muslim standard). Look what they did to Native Americans and people in Vietnam, and now in Iraq."
I wish there was someone to remind the young Turkish boy about the whole generation of Armenian orphans who grew up in the slums of Marseilles with images of their mothers raped and sisters thrown off the cliff by drunken Turkish soldiers shouting, "Fly, infidels, fly".

I wish the young Turk would be reminded of Turkish soldiers slitting the wombs of pregnant Armenian women open to stab a baby in front of a dying mother and, finally, I hope that one day the Turkish boy will grow up to become a filmmaker and make a movie that criticizes his own government, which still denies the Armenian Genocide and dumps billions of dollars and enormous political pressure on the US Congress not to accept it either. I hope the 18 year old Turkish boy who so sincerely cares about the extinction of the Hopi Indians in the US, will care about his history as well and make a movie about the genocides of many Christian Balkan nations by the Turkish Ottoman Empire.
I hope so, but I am afraid that by the time the boy enters his prime and chooses a subject for his first movie, there will be a whole herd of USC and UCLA film school graduates creating enough generic marxist garbage to clog the poor young Turks pipe to the truth of his own history.
